Unguided Visits
The trail system is available for unguided visits from dawn to dusk on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays! Please review these Frequently Asked Questions before planning your visit:
I am an Alderville First Nation member. Can I visit the site?
AFN community members can visit and use the site at any time.
Is the site accessible?
The trail system is not accessible. The Interpretive Gitigaan has a small accessible trail through it.
Are educational programs available for schools?
Yes, school programming is offered with curriculum-linked content related to ecology, conservation, and Indigenous knowledge systems. To book, please visit the Guided Visits page
Is the site open to the public?
The Alderville Black Oak Savanna is an active restoration site. As such, unguided visits are limited to Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays, from dawn to dusk.
Can I bring my dog or pet?
No pets are allowed on site, as they can disturb wildlife and sensitive plant species.
Can I host an event or bring a large group?
Our Ecology Center is available to rent, pending availability. Large group visits or events must be booked in advance. Contact staff to discuss options and availability.
Are guided tours available?
Yes. All tours must be booked in advance for individuals, schools, or groups. See Guided Visits for more info.
Are there any rules I should know about?
Please review our Terms & Conditions prior to your visit. You must stay on designated trails, do not pick plants/seeds or disturb wildlife, and pack out all trash. Respect the cultural and ecological significance of the site. Wear sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen, insect repellent, and bring water. Be aware of ticks and poison ivy.
